I’ll admit I got a little salty when my stepdaughter K attended the school book fair and had Muffins with Mom and Donuts with Dad. Not only do I crave bonding time with her, but reading time is our favorite. Remember when she said I taught her how adventures in books work and helped her cultivate a love of reading?

Reading is so important for her, but it’s also important for us as stepmom and daughter. It gives us shared experiences, quiet time, and snuggles.

Cinnamons with Stepmom

So I took matters into my own hands, and Cinnamons with Stepmom was born.

The concept is really simple. We purchase books (either from Usborne, Amazon, or Half Price Books) and bake cinnamon rolls on a morning when we can have some girl time for about an hour. Once the cinnamon rolls come out of the oven, we pick out a book and begin reading!

We initiated Cinnamons with Stepmom last year with a haul of books we picked up from Half Price Books. This year, I got really lucky. I had earned several free books by hosting an Usborne party (if you’re interested, let me know!) so I was able to use those books for our breakfast bonding experience.

Not Just Another Breakfast

K and I have had our fair share of mommy daughter days. We’ve played games, completed homework together, cooked dinner side-by-side, and snuggled up to catch up on our latest book series at night. We have a really great relationship, but like with all relationships, it takes nurturing to grow (or even just maintain!).

Setting aside time and designating it as special means so much to children, no matter whether it’s a biological or step parent initiating. There are 5 main reasons I really love our simple tradition.

1. I teach her a little about cooking.

Okay, sometimes we do cinnamon rolls out of a can, but other times we get a little more adventurous in the kitchen. Even if it is just canned cinnamon rolls, she learns about turning the oven on, preparing the pan, setting the timer, and kitchen utensils used to ice the treats.

2. I read with her.

You know that reading is my favorite! I’m building her creativity, imagination, and vocabulary with one simple breakfast. The stories inspire, challenge, and excite her. Reading is really the best.

3. I make her feel special.

I’ve taken time out of my day to dedicate to only her. How special is that? It makes her feel like the luckiest little girl in the whole world. Adults can get so busy with grown-up stuff, so it’s really important to take a few minutes every now and then to focus on only our little ones.

4. I establish myself as a parent.

I’ve now put myself on an even playing field with Mom and Dad, so she can see me as a parent too. It drives home the fact that she has more parents than normal that love her!

5. I assure my husband I’m all in.

I’m not sure if my husband has ever doubted that I love his daughter like my own, but if he ever did, he’d only have to look at this breakfast to see that I went out of my way to make her feel special and to make a true effort to bond with his daughter.

Your Own Breakfast Bonding

There are so many other ways you could do breakfast bonding:

Pancakes with Papa

Granola with Grandma

Smoothies (or Cereal) with Stepdad

Bacon with Brother & Sausage with Sister

Bonding with stepchildren - cinnamon rolls with stepmom

What are you waiting for?

I’m so excited to hear about your breakfast bonding with stepchildren! Did you stick with cinnamon rolls (hehe, pun intended) or did you spice it up a little?

I can’t wait to see what fun you had!
